Mitch McConnell America Thanks You!
Keeping Merrick Garland off the Supreme Court was McConnell’s finest hour
I’m no fan of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky). At best McConnell is a swamp Republican that should be voted out of office at the next opportunity. Still America owes him a debt of gratitude for his part in getting 245 Trump judges on the federal bench. That’s 245 judges that are more likely to rule according to the Constitution rather than to follow some political agenda.
But America’s greatest thanks to McConnell should be for his role in preventing Merrick Garland from becoming a Supreme Court Justice. McConnell prevented Garland’s nomination from being heard and debated in the Senate. McConnell didn’t do anything extraordinary; he was just playing the same politics played by both parties throughout history. It’s common for the party controlling the Senate to refuse to consider a Supreme Court nomination from the White House (controlled by the other party) during the final months of that Presidents second term. That bit of political theatre spared the country from having Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court.
Merrick Garland is currently the US Attorney General. He possesses neither the character nor the integrity for the job. As bad as this is Garland will likely be gone by 2024 so the damage he will inflict on America is limited. That would not be the case had he made it to the Supreme Court.
Recently Garland directed federal authorities to target parents that chose to voice their opinions at local school board meetings. Many American parents are rightfully concerned about what is currently being done in schools. From the forced leftist indoctrination of Critical Race Theory to the extremely damaging and useless COVID restrictions children are being harmed and parents across the country are concerned. The response of the Biden administration is to brand parents that disagree with their policies “domestic terrorists” and use federal agencies as tools of intimidation.
The DOJ, FBI, Homeland Security, and Secret Service will now be used to intimidate parents who are unhappy about how they and their children are being treated and are expressing that unhappiness to those responsible – local school boards.
Garland’s actions are at the behest of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) who apparently don’t like parents objecting to their leftist indoctrination programs. NSBAs objection can be seen here and Garlands almost immediate response here.
Laws and the rights of citizens aren’t typically a big concern to those wielding political power on the left. Fortunately, in this case it seems that this gross abuse of power isn’t going to be tolerated.
Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) are demanding answers. In a letter to Garland, Senator Cotton demanded answers to the following:
1. "Did the NSBA letter prompt you to issue the aforementioned memorandum? If not, what considerations prompted you to issue the memorandum?"
2. "Have any state or local authorities or other organizations besides the NSBA requested or encouraged the Biden administration to take action against this alleged rise in violence and intimidation against school officials? If so, which organizations?"
3. "Please provide all sources to support your claim in the memorandum that 'there has been a disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff.'"
4. Please document any cases of physical violence committed against school district officials in recent protests against school policies and curriculum."
5. "When, according to your analysis, did this purported spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence occur? Do you agree with the NSBA's claim that the alleged spike is being fomented by mask mandates and curricula teaching critical race theory?"
6. "Do you agree with the NSBA's assessment that protests against school district policies and curricular instruction may amount to domestic terrorism?"
7. "The NSBA requested that you invoke specific authorities to prosecute as 'domestic extremists' parents who disagree with the positions of their school boards. Please explain whether you believe any of the following federal laws could be used to prosecute those who protest against local school board policies and their members:
1. Gun-Free School Zones Act.
2. Patriot Act.
3. Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
4. Violent Interference with Federally Protected Rights statute.
5. Conspiracy Against Rights statute."
Others are calling for action as well. This kind of abuse of power is becoming all too common in our society. It will continue and it will get worse until Americans stand up and refuse to allow it. We still have laws, we still have free speech, we still have elections, and we still have rights. Americans need to make use of all these things before it’s too late.
Americans also need to support and thank men like Senators Cotton and Hawley for what they do. And finally, we need to thank Mitch McConnell, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
