The Minister of Disinformation (or misinformation or whatever)
Are you happy with the Biden administration (or any administration) deciding what is or is not disinformation?
If the Biden administration has its way, we will have a Ministry of Disinformation. More accurately (not to be spreading disinformation) they have proposed a “Disinformation Governance Board” to combat the dissemination of misinformation. Could this be a response to the Democrat’s increasingly dismal prospects in the coming 2022 midterms? Nah they wouldn’t do that.
If we are to have a government entity determine what is and what isn’t disinformation it makes sense that it be created by experts in the field. Jen Psaki, the “Red Queen” of disinformation along with the rest of the Biden administration arguably represent the gold standard in spreading disinformation. Joking aside this concept should be extremely frightening to all Americans no matter your political views.
If this evil entity is to be created who then should be the Minister of Disinformation? Jen Psaki would be an obvious choice to head up the effort, but she has a day job and with her upcoming MSNBC career she is likely unavailable. Although the ability to cry on command and keep a straight face while defending the absurd make her a strong contender for the position. Who then shall lead the Disinformation Governance Board?
Enter Nina Jankowicz, an “avowed free speech opponent and peddler of disinformation”. This piece by John Hinderaker provides a glimpse of Ms. Jankowicz. She definitely is experienced in the realm of disinformation, and she admittedly has some talent as an entertainer, but I’m not sure we should trust her to decide what is and what isn’t disinformation.
The Disinformation Governance Board would fall under the Department of Homeland Security where it would be well positioned to target American citizens or at least conservative ones. For instance, according to Ms. Jankowicz, Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a sign of Republicans weaponizing emotions.
One area of focus would be social media. Ms. Jankowicz has been critical of those mocking Vice President Kamala Harris online. “Gender misinformation” related to the mocking of Harris is a threat to national security and a threat to our very democracy according to Jankowicz.
She cites online mockery of political women including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to solidify her argument. Oddly there’s no mention of conservative women. Apparently, it’s only a problem when idiots on the internet attack women on the left. Viciously attacking conservative women like Sarah Palin, Laura Ingram, or Ann Coulter online is apparently just fine.
As mentioned earlier, all Americans should be extremely alarmed at the creation of this government entity. Conservative politicians are speaking out in opposition to this as can be expected since the Board will likely be weaponized and used against conservative citizens. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas did a terrible job of justifying and defending the Board to congress.
Some Democrats have even joined in raising concern over a government entity deciding what is or isn’t disinformation. While this is encouraging, their unease seems to be disingenuous and mostly political backpedaling and proactive damage control rather than true concern for the welfare of the American people. Serious opposition is coming from the usual places, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky) for instance in his grilling of Mayorkas over this issue.
While its great that politicians like Rand Paul (R-Ky), Ted Cruz (R-Tx), and Marco Rubio (R-Fl) are speaking out, the real answer lies with the American people. It’s said that only about 5% of registered voters participate in the political process beyond voting. With that level of interest, it’s easy to see how certain politicians can consistently implement policies that harm the American people and degrade our liberty and freedom.
Those familiar with my work have seen me ask this question before: in what kind of country do you wish to live? If you’re happy with the government deciding what information you can or can’t see then great, do nothing, you’re home. If you find that idea shocking do something, get involved. 5% is no longer an acceptable option.
