The Weekly Roundup is a feature offered to my readers in addition to my regular articles. The Roundup is a collection of mostly recent articles you probably haven’t seen by writers you may not have read. The main intent is to expose readers to a reasonable amount of hopefully new information in the hope this will encourage some to explore further and develop a deeper understanding of the issues that shape our society and ultimately determine our way of life. The secondary intent is to offer some interesting reading for you while providing exposure for some great writers. Enjoy!
Contrary to what some people believe, most Americans live in relative safety when it comes to the possibility of being a murder victim. While people should take responsibility for their own safety, (you can be a victim of violent crime without being murdered) areas that experience higher murder rates are fairly concentrated. Dr. John Lott explains (with cool graphics) in New Research: Murders in US remain very concentrated in 2024, with the murders in worst 2% of counties remaining at their 2020 peaks.
In a related study, the Crime Prevention Research Center takes a look at murderers and their victims by race (also with easy to understand graphics) in A deep dive into murders, who murders whom.
The anti-gun Left had an interesting reaction to a 3rd Circuit ruling favoring normal Americans. AWR Hawkins reports in Slate: 3rd Circuit Ruling Gives SCOTUS “Cover” to Find Constitutional Protection for AR-15s.
The Left will eventually lose the fight against the Second Amendment, but they are not going to go away quietly. AWR Hawkins examines a recent example in Rockefeller Institute Pushes Gun Control to Offset Constitutional Carry.
It would be challenging to find a modern movie that doesn’t contain at least one scene involving a gun. Still accidents involving firearms are relatively rare on set which is surprising considering the level of ignorance of people in the industry when it comes to firearms. Tom McHale reports on some examples that are both scary and humorous in Take Two: Hollywood Still Can’t Handle a Gun.

The weekly meme is chosen from dozens posted in the Week in Pictures originally created by Steven Hayward and for a time carried on by his colleague John Hinderaker of the Powerline blog. Hayward and Hinderaker have now decided to alternate their WIP duties each week. Welcome back Steven! Powerline features excellent reporting and analysis of American politics and culture. I’ve been reading the work of Hayward and his colleagues for over fifteen years.
