Weekly Roundup # 94
A collection of interesting articles you may not have seen by authors you may not have read
The Weekly Roundup is a feature offered to my readers in addition to my regular articles. The Roundup is a collection of mostly recent articles you probably haven’t seen by writers you may not have read. The main intent is to expose readers to a reasonable amount of hopefully new information in the hope this will encourage some to explore further and develop a deeper understanding of the issues that shape our society and ultimately determine our way of life. The secondary intent is to offer some interesting reading for you while providing exposure for some great writers. Enjoy!
The use of misinformation is a common theme in the propaganda generated by the anti-gun crowd as they wage war on freedom and normal Americans. In California, the government now requires “mental health” to be discussed in mandatory concealed carry qualification classes in an attempt to link gun ownership and suicide. Tom Knighton examines a new twist on this old idea in The Trace Peddling Fear of Suicides for Older Men in Mountain West.
The DOJ of the Trump administration is decidedly better for gun owners than that of previous administrations, but it still has a ways to go. Career bureaucrats have their own philosophy and bias that is not going to change just because there is a new President in town. Cam Edwards considers one aspect of this bias in FPC Calls on Trump to Reverse DOJ Stance Defending Federal Gun Laws.
Anti-gun forces frequently use members of the medical profession to promote anti-gun propaganda. Gun owners have a responsibility to counter the effects of misinformation on family, friends, and colleagues, whenever the opportunity arises, through friendly discussion with those willing to learn. Lee Williams presents another example of how intentionally incorrect information is used to influence opinions in How one of the country’s loudest anti-gun doctors gets data for his anti-gun stories.
I was recently in New Jersey to visit my 92 year old mother and attend my 50th high school reunion. At a local grocery store I was going through the checkout line and had an interesting conversation with the checker. The woman probably in her late forties mentioned, when she learned I was a firearms instructor, that she didn’t think she’d ever been in the same room with a gun. This is a sad situation in many respects but the most serious one would be a likely lack of knowledge regarding firearms safety. Cam Edwards points out what can happen in a society where many people can reach adulthood without even a basic knowledge of firearms in Landscapers Learn the Hard Way That Eddie Eagle’s Advice Applies to Adults Too.
The Weekly Roundup now includes a humorous meme to lighten the day. The weekly meme is chosen from dozens posted in the Week in Pictures originally created by Steven Hayward but now carried on by his colleague John Hinderaker of the Powerline blog. Powerline features excellent reporting and analysis of American politics and culture. I’ve been reading the work of Hayward and his colleagues for over fifteen years.
Enjoy this week’s meme.
